VentilationHRV200The Problem
Kerrydale Stables Ltd. had a significant energy problem. The high cost of electricity to heat the 18 000 sq ft. facility was not economical. The annual electrical cost was approximately $21 000 per year. The owner approached Your Solar Home Inc. with a desire to reduce the annual bill. The most economical solution was a combination of solar air collection walls integrated into the building and HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation). The owner also asked for an overall evaluation of current energy practices.

Previous Heating Technology
The current method of heating was electric throughout the facility. Four 220 Volt 5kw construction heaters were used in the corridor or main barn area. The viewing room utilized two 2500 watt in wall electric heaters. The offices, tack store and party room were utilizing electric baseboard heaters.

Recommendation and Solution
The four 5 kw electric construction heaters were turned off and unplugged. Insulation was blown in above the main corridor and over the offices, tack room and party room. The viewing lounge heaters were turned off and small in wall 1 kw electric heaters were installed with programmable thermostat timers. Programmable thermostat timers were added in each the offices, and party room.

Two walls of solar air collection systems were employed. A large south wall generates supplemental heat for the office and main corridor of a commercial horse farm 23 stalls, during the winter months. Air is transferred by a large 700 CFM fan to the offices and main corridor. A timer and control system regulars incoming heat and temperature.
